Hats, hats, hats...

Knitted blue hat with white pom-pom 

After knitting scarfs and lots of scarfs my next projects were hats. Lots of hats with different patterns, stitches or colors. I started doing for me and then went to the next level and did for my little boy.

I like funny hats so knitting for a kid funny hats is like a dream come true. I did giraffe hat, simple hat, Viking hat, etc. The one in this post is a hat for me and is a very simple one. I love skiing, so this hat I did to have when I am on the slope and want to have a tea or coffee break.

It is a simple pattern with a simple classical stitch.  This hat keeps my head warm in the winter and looks great also. You can learn a little girl to do it because is simple.

Pattern: knit one, purl one (K1, P1) ribbing

Cast on an odd number of stitches.
Row 1 (right side) Knit one, *purl one, knit one; repeat from * to end.
Row 2 Purl one, *knit one, purl one; repeat from * to end.
Repeat rows 1 and 2.

For the pom-pom you don’t need a fancy machine. Your own two hands are just the magic tools.

I wanted to change the color of the pom-pom and I use white like snow. Goes great with all the colors.

Take the end and snip a 30cm - 60cm length and set it aside. Start wrapping the yarn from the ball around your 3 – 4 fingers for a regular adult-sized pom-pom for a hat.

Wrap it lots of times. Keep in mind, the bigger you want your pom-pom, the more times you need to wrap it. When you leave the yarn long on the pom-pom, it spreads out more, making it look less full.
Once it’s as full as you need it, pull it off your fingers, holding it firm so you don’t lose any loops. 

Take the yarn you cut previously, and tie it around the middle. It is very important that it is tied as tight as possible. If it is loose at all, the pom-pom will easily come apart. 

Once the knot is tied, cut all the loops. The yarn will fall into a haggard, overgrown pom-pom shape. 

Finish your pom-pom by giving it a nice, round haircut. Make sure you leave the two ends of your tie piece long. 

Using a yarn needle and one of the ends sew a circle around the top of the hat (5 or 6 stitches). Once is done pull both the ends of the yarn through to inside of the hat and tie a strong knot. This will keep your pom-pom.

It took me a lot of pom-poms to do before I got it right. This pom-pom is one of the first I did so is not so strong.
